Construction of Bunker on Hole #12
March 2006

Lake Valley's Comprehensive Long Range Plan has for many years included the construction of a sand bunker on the right-front corner on hole #12.  In March of 2006, construction of that bunker began.

Alex and Ozzie discuss the slope of the bunker face.  Actually, Alex is telling Ozzie that he isn't building this bunker just for Ozzie to play in!

Proper base construction is crucial in the construction of a bunker.  Here, Alex is using a shovel to put finishing touches on the face of the bunker, while Roger works on installing a clean-out for the drain system of the bunker.  The drain tile extends several feet below the bunker on the hillside.

Alex covers the drain tile with pea gravel, while Roger completes installation of the clean-out on the other end of the drain.

When completed this bunker will hold several inches of sand.

With the drain tile installed and completely covered with pea gravel, Roger uses a hand tamper to pack the dirt on the rear face of the bunker.

Kevin and Kelly admire Roger's tamping work.  The Sand Pro was used to smooth the bottom of the bunker and to compact the dirt prior to the sand installation.

Nearly completed now, the next step will be the installation of sod on the faces and surrounding areas of the bunker.

With part of the sod installed around the top of the bunker, the process of filling it with sand begins.

B.J. dumps another load of sand into the new bunker.  It will take several loads to provide enough sand for the proper depth.   Once the sand is in place the remaining sod will be laid around the bottom of the bunker.
