Golf Course Grounds
Crew & Equipment

Maintaining a golf course is a tremendous job, one that requires a large amount and variety of equipment, and a staff of workers that are dedicated to using that equipment to prepare our course into the best condition possible.  We are fortunate at LVCC to have a great grounds staff, that does a wonderful job with the equipment we are able to provide them.  Collectively, these 11 men have 160+ years of golf course experience.

As you should know, Alex Hultz is our superintendent and does a great job.  Alex has a BS degree in Management from Quincy University '94,  and a BS degree in Agronomy from Southwest Missouri State University '98.  Alex came to LVCC in 2003.

The images and descriptions below are to introduce you to both our staff and to some of the pieces of equipment that you might see them operating.  It's easy for us to show up on Tuesday afternoon, or Saturday morning, or whenever, and not really think about the amount of work that goes into keeping our course in great condition.  These guys all work 40 hours (or more) a week and do much more than just mow grass.

Deep tine aerifying and topdressing (video 3.5Mb)
On Monday, March 27, 2006 we used a deep-tine aerifier to punch 1/2" wide holes 9" deep in the greens, followed immediately by a light sand top dressing.  Watch the 3.5Mb video of the aerifier followed by sanding.

Alex uses the Toro HydroJect to inject water and aerify the 12th green.  The Hydroject injects a series of small streams of water into the green at roughly 3000psi pressure, reducing soil compaction and at the same time injecting water about 6" below the surface of the green (or tee).  We purchased this piece of equipment in 1995 or 1996 at a cost of about $25,000.  It is a vital tool in the superintendent's battle to give us the quality greens we want.

The next three photos are of Glen McGuire mowing the 14th green on one of our two John Deere triplex mowers.  These mowers are used exclusively for mowing our greens.  Typical cutting height during season is .120" (120/1000's)

If you want to know what changes have taken place on the course, Glen would be a good person to ask.  He has been at LVCC for 38 years.

Among the jobs that Glen performs at LVCC are: pump station / irrigation technician; greens mower; pool maintenance/repair; trencher; chainsaw; chemical spraying, and "just about anything else you can think of", says Alex about Glen.  "If it's broke, he can fix it."

On the right is Glen's brother Gene, who has been at LVCC since May 1967.  Today, most of Gene's duties involve equipment maintenance, and he rarely ventures out of the maintenance building unless it is to check on a piece of equipment to make sure it is functioning properly.

Gene's duties include equipment maintenance / repair and backhoe operator.  Gene has 40 years experience at Lake Valley.   Alex considers Glen and Gene both as "critical to LVCC".

Roger Jones is our Assistant Superintendent and has 18 years experience on golf courses.  His typical duties include:  pump station / irrigation technician; greens mower; chemical applicator (spraying); chainsaw; trencher; electrical; carpentry; tractor operator; backhoe operator; and landscaping.  Roger can operate all of the equipment that we have.

Harold Stephens pilots the Toro fairway mower.  Harold's normal duties include: fairway mower; greens mower; rough mower; daily course set up (tees/trash/coolers); mowing tees/collars/aprons; chemical applicator (sprayer); and painting.

Harold has about 13 years experience on the golf course.

Kevin Crowell uses one of our Toro mowers to mow the 7th tee.  Kevin is a recent (2004) addition to LVCC, but he has 15 years experience.  His normal duties include: greens mower; changing cups; daily set up (tees/trash/coolers); mowing tees/collars/aprons; rough mowing; weed eating; chemical applicator; bunker raking; tractor operator.  Kevin can operate every piece of equipment at LVCC.

Kelly Crowell also came to LVCC in 2004.  Here he is shown on a second Toro mowing the 1st tee.

Kelly has 4 years experience and typical duties include:  greens mower; daily course set up (tees/trash/coolers);  mowing tees/collars/aprons; weed eating; rough mowing, bunker raking.

B.J. Wall stops long enough to have his picture taken.  BJ is shown on our rotary mower that is used for mowing  roughs.  B.J. has 4 years experience at LVCC, and his primary duty includes mowing green surrounds, but he also does: carpentry; tractor operator; backhoe operator; mows tees/collars/approaches; greens mower; bunker rake operator; rough mower; and daily course set up (tees/trash/coolers).

Charlie Parker rides the Sand Pro in the bunker on #9.  Among Charlie's normal duties are: mowing green surrounds; bunker maintenance; setting cups; daily course set up (tees/trash/coolers); landscaping; chainsaw; weed eating; greens mower; pool maintenance / seasonal preparation.

Alex's crew generally rakes our traps most mornings before play begins, unless they are held up by weather, etc.

To show the level of effort our crew will go to in order to present us with the best possible playing conditions, the picture to the left shows Alex using a wet/dry shop vac (powered by a gas generator, in case you're wondering) to suck up excess water on the 17th green.  This was on a beautiful August Tuesday morning (men's day) after we'd received a sizable rainfall the night before, and he wanted to make certain the course was ready for Men's Day.

Alex is quick to point out that even though he has listed typical duties for each employee, they are all capable of performing numerous tasks and regularly overlap duties.  He also emphasizes that when we undertake a project at LVCC all of his employees participate.

In the two pictures below Charlie uses our Buffalo Turbine blower to blow leaves off of #4 tee.  The Buffalo Turbine is rated at 10,500 cubic feet per minute of air movement, at 180 mph nozzle speed.   And, if you'll notice, the nozzle is about 12" across!  This baby moves a lot of air!  The Buffalo Turbine was a new acquisition for us in the fall of 2007.
