Par 3 Fairways

On July 1, 2009 we adjusted the amount of "fairway" that was being mowed on four of our par 3 holes.  We had received a request from the Ladies Golf Association to mow more tightly cut fairway on holes 2, 13, 15, and 17.  Upon reviewing our Long Range Plan we discovered that the requests were in-line with the mowing pattern that was suggested in the LRP and the decision was made to lower the cutting height on these sections from 2.5" to the standard fairway height of .70".

These newly mown areas will be slightly discolored for a few days until the grass recovers from the shock and adjusts to its new height.  The good news is that on all four of these holes there was a large population of bermuda grass already in these areas, so it should adjust well and quickly to the new, lower mowing height.

The process began with Kevin using a fairway mower to mow the new area down from 2.5" to .70".  This was cutting an extreme amount of plant material in one process.  In fact, the cut was so severe that it took at least four passes to get everything, as clippings from each pass were getting in the way.

Here is a closer view of just how much material was being cut with each pass.  This is actually about the 3rd pass over this particular location.

Between passes with the fairway mower, Alex made a quick run over the newly mown area to blow off the bulk of the clippings.  If this wasn't done the clippings would have interfered with the next mowing pass.

After Kevin completed four or five passes with the fairway mower, and Alex blew off the clippings, Kelly follows them with a tee mower to mow the finished height of .70".

This view of #13 was taken while Kevin was still mowing with the fairway mower, but it provides a view of how much the fairway was extended toward the tee.

This is Kevin making the first pass on #17 fairway.  You can see how much grass is being cut on this pass.

This view of #17 gives an indication how much the fairway has been extended.  Like #13, the new fairway cut extends toward the tee far enough that it should be visible from the tee box.

Another view of #17.
