Top Dressing

In March 2007 we took delivery of a new John Deere Gator equipped with a Dakota 810 spreader.  This combined piece of equipment will replace the many-years-old drop spreader that we have used in the past.   Below is a picture of the rig, and a link to a 3Mb .wmv file showing it in action.    Further down on the page is a picture and movie of the old equipment for comparison.

In addition to just saying this unit is "newer and better", it offers some specific advantages over the old drop-spreader.  For starters, the hopper on the drop spreader was about a foot narrower than the bucket on our tractor, so every time we loaded it with sand there was an overrun that had to be cleaned up.  The Dakota box is the same size as the tractor bucket, so a full bucket = a full hopper.  Quicker and no waste.

Another feature of the Dakota is that because it is a "spinner" design, it can be set to broadcast at varying speeds.  This will give Alex the option of putting on a very light dressing on a more frequent basis.  The drop spreader had basically one speed.

Finally, the drop spreader put down about a 5' wide path each pass across the green, meaning that it took several passes to cover an entire green.  The Dakota spreads about a 20' path with each pass.  In this video, it took about 3 1/2 passes to sand the entire 16th green.
